Captain’s License Renewal (not more than 100 tons)
USCG-approved renewal course and exam (USCAPT 242) for an OUPV or Master not more than 100 tons. Use it if you cannot document 360 days in the past five years. If you have that time, you can renew without this course. You may still take it instead of submitting sea service.

Online Final Examination
Take the finals when you are ready. They are USCG approved and done online with a live proctor on Google Meet. Nothing to install. The proctor walks you through the setup.
Prepare
Finish both exam modules before you schedule.

There is no deadline to get ready. Take as long as you need. You can also move as fast as you want. The finals cannot be scheduled until the badges are earned.

Take the exams
Renewal is two open-book exams, taken as one battery:
- (EM475) Rules of the Road: Inland and International Renewal Open Book Exercise — 50 questions, 90% to pass
- (EM164) Master LT 100 GRT Renewal Open Book Exercise — 50 questions, 90% to pass
Have your Rules of the Road book with you. Both exams are open book.
A live proctor meets you on Google Meet. No lockdown browser. You need a computer with a webcam and microphone, and a phone or tablet for the second camera angle. The proctor checks you in and stays with you.
When you pass the battery, your USCG-approved Certificate of Training unlocks and is issued immediately.
Exam rules
- Both exams must be completed on consecutive days in the same business week.
- Complete at least two exams per day. That is one day for the first battery.
- You get three attempts at each exam.
- After the first exam of the battery, you have 90 days to finish any retests. That clock starts the day of your first exam.
- Fail any exam three times and the Coast Guard requires you to retake the course. You do not buy the course again. You pay a retest and administration fee.
- These exams replace testing at a Regional Exam Center. You do not take a separate exam with the Coast Guard.

License qualifications
This course meets the open-book exam requirement to renew an OUPV or Master not more than 100 tons. The Coast Guard still has to approve the renewal. Use their current checklists as the last word:
- National renewal — MMC not expired beyond 6 years
- National reinstatement — expired beyond the 6-year grace period
Renewal
If the credential is not expired beyond 6 years, you can renew with one of these:
- 360 days of service in the past 5 years
- This course (approved open-book exercise)
- An approved refresher course
- Closely related employment, or teaching an approved course, as listed on the NMC checklist
Deck officers renewing without sea service must also cover Rules of the Road. This course includes that exercise.
Reinstatement
If the credential is expired beyond 6 years, NMC treats it as a reinstatement. You must show continued professional knowledge with an approved course or the original Coast Guard exam. Call us before you buy if you are past the 6-year grace.

Exam
This course’s Certificate of Training (USCAPT 242) is accepted in place of the Coast Guard renewal exercise.

USCG license application
Pass this course and you have the exam piece to renew. Apply to the Coast Guard with the certificate to renew your OUPV or Master not more than 100 tons.
Apply in Navita. Start at the National Maritime Center. Use Launch NAVITA. Sign in with Login.gov. Complete your profile, then start an MMC renewal in the portal. Do not email a packet to a Regional Exam Center.
You can start the application before you finish the course. Evaluation still runs about four to six weeks. If NMC approves you pending training, you have one year to use the Certificate of Training. That certificate is only valid for one year.
After you pass, upload the Certificate of Training (USCAPT 242) in Navita on that same application. If you are renewing with 360 days of sea service instead, you do not need the certificate.

What you will provide in Navita
- MMC renewal application (CG-719B), completed in the portal
- Sea service (CG-719S or equivalent), only if you are renewing with 360 days instead of this course
- Medical certificate, or a medical certificate application (CG-719K) if yours is expired
- Drug test within 6 months (CG-719P or consortium letter)
- Conviction disclosure (CG-719C) if it applies
- Certificate of Training from this course, when you have it
- Fees, paid in the portal through Pay.gov
Usual extra costs (estimates)
- Drug test: often part of a physical, about $160 if you need both. Any physician can complete the 719K exam. Many students use US Drug Test Centers (866-566-0261) for the drug screen.
- Pay.gov evaluation and issuance: renewals cost less than an original. The portal calculates the fee.
- TWIC, First Aid, and CPR are not part of a routine renewal if you already hold them.
