Online Final Examination
Take the finals when you are ready. They are USCG approved and done online with a live proctor on Google Meet. Nothing to install. The proctor walks you through the setup.
Prepare
Finish all five exam modules before you schedule.

Open every activity and pass every quiz in each module to earn the badge. You need all five badges to schedule.
There is no deadline to get ready. Take as long as you need. You can also move as fast as you want. The finals cannot be scheduled until the badges are earned.
Schedule
Go to My Courses and open Final Examination – Master 100 (USCAPT 281). Use the link labeled “Click here to Schedule your Pre Exam Consultation for Master 100 Final Examination.”
That booking is a call with your proctor, not the exam. On the call you confirm you are ready, set exam days a few days out, and go over how a well-prepared student passes on the first try. The proctor also collects what they need for your Coast Guard file.
Take the exams
Master 100 is five exams, taken as one battery:
- (EM100) Rules of the Road: International and Inland — 50 questions, 90% to pass
- (EM160) Deck General — 50 questions, 70% to pass
- (EM161) Deck Safety — 50 questions, 70% to pass
- (EM162) Navigation General: Near Coastal — 50 questions, 70% to pass
- (EM163) Chart Plot — 10 questions, 90% to pass
Bring the Block Island chart, parallel rules, and dividers. You will plot on the Block Island chart during the Chart Plot exam.
A live proctor meets you on Google Meet. No lockdown browser. You need a computer with a webcam and microphone, and a phone or tablet for the second camera angle. The proctor checks you in and stays with you.
When you pass the battery, your USCG-approved Certificate of Training unlocks and is issued immediately.
Exam rules
- All five exams must be completed on consecutive days in the same business week.
- Complete at least two exams per day. That is three days for the first battery.
- You get three attempts at each exam.
- After the first exam of the battery, you have 90 days to finish any retests. That clock starts the day of your first exam.
- Fail any exam three times and the Coast Guard requires you to retake the course. You do not buy the course again. You pay a retest and administration fee.
- These exams replace testing at a Regional Exam Center. You do not take a separate exam with the Coast Guard.

License qualifications
This course meets the exam requirement for Master. The Coast Guard still has to approve your application. Use their current checklists as the last word:

General requirements
- U.S. citizenship
- Age 19 or older
- Medical certificate: hold a valid medical certificate, or have one approved / submit a medical certificate application
- Drug testing compliant
- Mariner user fees paid
Sea service
Route and tonnage come from your service.
- Near Coastal Master — 720 days total; 360 of those days seaward of the boundary line or on the Great Lakes; 90 days in the last seven years. Near Coastal Master is up to 200 miles offshore and also covers Great Lakes & Inland and Inland.
- Great Lakes and Inland Master — 360 days total; 90 days on the Great Lakes; 90 days in the last seven years.
- Inland Master — 360 days total; 90 days in the last seven years.
Tonnage
The Coast Guard sets 25, 50, or 100 GT from the size of the vessels in your sea service, not from this course title.
Master 100 GT
- Inland: 90 days on 51 GT or more, or 180 days on 34 GT or more
- Near Coastal: 180 days on 51 GT or more, or 360 days on 34 GT or more
Master 50 GT
- Inland: 90 days on 26 GT or more, or 180 days on 17 GT or more
- Near Coastal: 180 days on 26 GT or more, or 360 days on 17 GT or more
Master 25 GT
- If you do not meet the 50 GT or 100 GT service, the Coast Guard issues 25 GT.
First Aid and CPR
For original issuance: First Aid completed within one year, and valid CPR.
Exam
This course’s Certificate of Training (USCAPT 281) is accepted in place of the Coast Guard Master exam.
Optional
Commercial Assistance Towing is a separate endorsement. Take our Towing Endorsement course to add it.

USCG license application
Passing this course does not issue the license. You still apply to the Coast Guard for a Merchant Mariner Credential.
Apply in Navita. Start at the National Maritime Center. Use Launch NAVITA. Sign in with Login.gov. Complete your profile, then start an MMC application in the portal. Do not email a packet to a Regional Exam Center.
You can start the application before you finish the course. Evaluation still runs about four to six weeks. If NMC approves you pending training, you have one year to use the Certificate of Training. That certificate is only valid for one year.
After you pass, upload the Certificate of Training (USCAPT 281) in Navita on that same application.

- MMC application (CG-719B), completed in the portal
- Sea service (CG-719S or equivalent)
- Medical certificate application (CG-719K)
- Drug test (CG-719P or consortium letter)
- Conviction disclosure (CG-719C) if it applies
- Certificate of Training from this course, when you have it
- TWIC or TWIC application receipt
- First Aid and CPR cards
- Fees, paid in the portal through Pay.gov
Usual extra costs (estimates)
- Physical and drug test: about $160. Any physician can complete the 719K exam. Many students use US Drug Test Centers (866-566-0261) for the drug screen.
- TWIC: about $125
- Pay.gov evaluation and issuance: about $145. The portal calculates the fee.
- CPR and First Aid: $74.95 for an approved online course
