Rules of the Road Handbook

The Rules of the Road Handbook is an excellent resource for learning the Navigational Rules of the Road – International and Inland. All of the video lectures in the Rules of the Road Exam Modules are based on this book. We strongly recommend having a copy of the Rules of the Road Handbook while completing the Rules of the Road Exam Module. On a side note, NTM 41-15 33 CFR 83.01(g) requires: ” The operator of each self-propelled vessel 12 meters or more in length shall carry, on board and maintain for ready reference, a copy of these Rules.”

Block Island Sound and Approaches – Chart 13205 TR

Block Island Sound and Approaches – Chart 13205 TR is required to complete Navigation Problems: Chart Plot Exam Module. The module requires you to physically work out problems on the chart using parallel rules and dividers to get answers. All of the problems are solved on the top half of the chart so you can fold the bottom half under which makes the chart a manageable size.

Parallel Ruler – 15 inch Brushed Aluminum Arm with Protractor

A parallel ruler is used in the Navigation Problems: Chart Plot Exam Module to plot positions and courses on the chart. If you have never used a parallel ruler before it seems strange but you will be good at it by the end of the Navigation Problems: Chart Plot Exam Module.

Dividers – 7 inch Ultra Light Dividers/Compass

Dividers are used to measure distances on a chart. These particular dividers are the best possible set for solving problems in the Navigation Problems: Chart Plot Exam Module. They have a worm screw which allows for very precise distance measurements, no wiggling or bouncing. They have a corrosion resistant coating and come with two different pointy tips and a lead tip.
